So how do I start

Modern scooters and small capacity motorcycles are very straightforward to ride, but whether you are taking up motorcycling for the first time, or returning to two wheels, it’s important to make sure that you are well prepared before you venture on to the road.

The Requirements :

Which Licence?

If you are aged 17+ you need to have a provisional motorcycle licence or provisional motorcycle entitlement on a full car licence. This will entitle you to ride any machine up to 125cc with a maximum power output of less than 11Kw (any of the bikes on this site!) once you have completed your Compulsory Basic Training.

Compulsory Basic Training : The CBT

Before you can take to the road you must first complete your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) which will lead you through the basic skills needed to ride safely. Usually taking place over a full day, the CBT course has five separate elements including guidance on machine controls, practical on-site training at the test centre, followed by on-road training accompanied by a qualified instructor. Once your instructor is satisfied that you have demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level, you will be issued with a Certificate Of Completion (DL 196) which lasts for two years and entitles you to ride on the road. As a learner rider you may not carry passengers or travel on motorways and your bike must be fitted with ‘L’ plates at all times.

Do I Need My Own Bike Or Scooter To Take The CBT?

Most motorcycle training schools will have suitable machines for hire if you want to take your CBT before buying a bike of your own. In many cases, Hunts Scoot & Commute can deliver your new bike direct to your chosen training school if you prefer. Please contact us for further information.

Insurance

It is a legal requirement that you have at least third party motorcycle insurance in place before you ride your new bike or scooter on the road. We have negotiated special rates with several leading insurance companies which can offer substantial savings on your scooter insurance premiums. Please ask us for more details!
